The ghosts of Mosborough Hall Hotel
What is in Yorkshire, 750 years old and has ghostly goings on?
The beautiful Mosborough Hall is a grand 47 bedroom luxurious hotel near Sheffield in the Peak District with a difference – it’s a ‘haunted house’. As we get to Halloween, Preston Baker and this Vine Hotel have teamed up to raise money for the amazing Yorkshire children’s charity Make a Dream. Find out how you can help us raise money for this great charity and how to WIN a night for two at the haunted Mosborough Hall Hotel.
Here’s the story of the different ghosts of the Best Western Mosborough Hall Hotel:
The White Lady is the most famous of them all and it began in the 1600s. As the tale goes, she was a governess and fell pregnant by the squire. In return for her silence, he promised money and a small cottage. When this wasn’t forthcoming she threatened to tell his wife and this led to her death in the squire’s desperation to keep the secret.
She had a large dog, and there’s also been reported stories of a Spectral Dog in the hall. This story comes from when a child was very ill and under constant care. One evening, the child’s parents went out and a seamstress slept near the cot to look after it. During the evening she spotted a large black dog in the doorway, it ambled over and gripped her wrist with its mouth for a moment before vanishing through the wall – the poor child passed away the next day but the teeth marks were on the woman’s wrist for life.
A more recent tale came at the start of the 20th century when local GP Dr. Pilcher spent a night alone in the room renowned for being haunted to prove that it wasn’t. He got through the evening, however in the morning when the Batman entered with his morning cup of tea, the doctor was alive and well but upon them both turning around at the door, the bed sheets were covered in blood. He had to be helped away and never returned to Mosborough Hall.
These stories are all chronicled on hauntedrooms.co.uk, and there is a further piece on there about exorcism and tragedy if you want more!
