8 of the Best Independent Stores in Leeds
Leeds city centre has a great mix of high street favourites, market stalls and independent stores. With that in mind, we thought we’d give some love to the latter with a look at eight of the best across the city. This list is by no means exhaustive, so feel free to share your favourites with us!
Opened in 2013 as a pop-up, Lambert’s Yard has become one of the most popular, innovative brand boutiques across Yorkshire. Catering for men, women and home, their ranges include brands like Violet & Wren, Bethnals and Hend Kitchen. It also uses the store for events and has a journal for fashion articles and blogs – like this one with The Powder Room founder Georgia Larsen.
From Vogue to the Telegraph, this beautiful Roundhay store continues to be listed as one of the best boutiques outside London. Around since 1981, the expert team stocks international labels and brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander Wang and Citizens of Humanity. With fashion style advice available, you can also use their dress agency for ‘pre-loved’ high-end clothing.
Get yourself some vintage furniture or antiques from this shop on Headingley Road. Whilst it is out of the city, it has become a popular haunt for both professionals and students. A spot where you could lose yourself for the best part of a morning, find everything from accessories to records or get your old furniture restored.
‘The major independent record store in Leeds’ is how Jumbo sells itself online. That sums it up pretty well for a shop that has nailed its niche and become a great place to spend some time around likeminded people. Whether you’re still on CDs or have vinyls spinning at home, head to the St. Johns Centre for a browse.
This award-winning shop in Thornton’s Arcade has become a favourite of many in the heart of the city. With new and old comics, magazines and graphic novels, the customer service and advice on offer make it popular with seasoned or new readers. Check out the selection online or get a preview with their social media pages.
Also in Thornton’s Arcade is the Planet of the Apes inspired Chimp. This small boutique has won awards and stocks brands from across the world. Around since 1998, the store is clean and minimalistic and the shop is widely regarded as having started many a trend across the city.
We finish with a toy shop like no other. There are two stores: one in Horsforth and another in Chapel Allerton. Your little ones will love it as there are toys for all ages. Stocking all big brands and other smaller providers, don’t be surprised to see your living room full of purchases from Armadillo Toys.
With the rise in popularity of microbreweries and the like across the United Kingdom, beer markets have popped up everywhere. One of the best comes from the heart of Leeds and is home to more than 350 beers from around the world. Classed as a ‘bottle shop, beer café and coffee spot’ on the website, it’s well worth a visit – especially if you need a present for Christmas!
