How to Buy Your Dream House

Looking to buy your dream home? Follow our tips to make it happen.

There are so many factors to consider when choosing your dream home. You need to think about what is important to you, and what you are prepared to compromise on. It’s a good idea to draw up a wishlist of features or attributes of your dream home, then decide which ones you absolutely must have, and which could be sacrificed if necessary to get the best possible home for your budget.

Here are some of the key factors to consider when looking for your ideal property:

Great outdoors

How much outdoor space do you want? A large garden might be the dream, but do you have the time, inclination or budget to maintain it and keep it looking great?

Ready to move in – or make your mark?

Do you want a property that suits your tastes from day one? A property where you won’t have to start stripping wallpaper and ripping out bathrooms as soon as you move in. Or maybe you’d like to have a project, and want a property that has potential but needs work to get it up to your standards. Are you able to see potential in properties that need a lot of work? If you would prefer to have exactly what you want, perhaps a new-build property is for you?

Modern style or traditional charm

Are you looking for a modern townhouse that gives you a blank canvas to decorate in your own style? Or are you looking for the character features and traditional charm of a Victorian terrace? Older properties often have beautifully proportioned rooms, but can lack outdoor space.

Modern and traditional properties both have advantages, so you need to think about which best suits your lifestyle and preferences.

Parking priorities

Do you need a garage or driveway – or are you happy with on-street parking? Many character terraces don’t have good parking facilities.

Location, location, location

The single biggest variable affecting property price is location. It's a cliché, but it's true! You can often afford your dream home, but not always in your dream location. Ultimately, you will need to decide what is most important to you.
