THINGS TO DO

Being on the River Ouse makes for a number of walks in the village. It is in the countryside and attracts visitors in the spring and summer who enjoy the picturesque countryside. There is both a Church of England and Methodist church.

EATING & DRINKING

The Ship Inn is a 17th-century pub that has its own jetty, a restaurant and is also a B&B. Alternative pubs can be found is Bishopthorpe and the York Designer Outlet is close for popular chains such as Pizza Hut and Wagamama's.

SHOPPING

York Designer Outlet and the city centre are close for shopping trips. The nearest grocery store is a Co-operative Food in Bishopthorpe.

SCHOOLS

Bishopthorpe's Archbishop of York's Church of England Junior School is the local primary school and the village is in the catchment area for the popular Fulford Secondary School.

TRANSPORT LINKS

Using Appleton Road will take you north to Bishopthorpe and then to York in about 15 minutes. Public transport is the York to Tadcaster bus route. Alternatively, Temple Lane to Copmanthorpe joins up with the A64 out of town and it is less than 25 miles to Leeds, where the closest airport - Leeds Bradford International - is found.

HISTORY

Originally a Roman site named Val-Caester, meaning walled camp, it has been continuously inhabited and was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Acastre. The land was owned by the Malbysse family for a couple of hundred years before the Fairfax family inherited and held the land until 1745. RAF Acaster Malbis was commissioned in 1942 and ran until 1963 - this has since been demolished.
