HISTORY

The Ecclesall ward incorporates five districts - Bents Green, Ecclesall, Greystones, Millhouses, and Ringinglow - and it has been this way since 1934. Historically, the area between the River Sheaf and Porter Brook has been known as Ecclesall Bierlow and was part of Barnsdale Forest and the Robin Hood legends. Earliest reference to this area is the 13th century with the establishment of Ecclesall Corn Mill at Millhouses. It was sparsely populated until the industrial revolution and is now a popular commuter area to Sheffield.
