About Woodhouse

Surrounded by trees and lush, green space, Woodhouse is a beautiful neighbourhood just outside central Leeds. Less than two miles north of the city centre and home to the University of Leeds, you can choose from redbrick housing, terrace properties and modern apartments.

THINGS TO DO

Families and residents of all ages enjoy the beautiful green space of Woodhouse Moor. The park is equipped with spacious lawns, sports fields, tennis courts and a BMX park. Founded in 1758, the Middleton Railway is the oldest continually running railway in the world and still operates on the weekends and public holidays. There are also several children’s centres and fun activities for kids in the area. The First Direct Arena hosts comedians and music gigs.

EATING & DRINKING

Woodhouse’s large student community lends itself to a vibrant nightlife and diverse food scene. For fast, filling food on-the-go, Simpson’s Pizzeria, Island Grill and McDonalds are favourite takeaways. Arkwright’s Fish & Chips serves a delicious version of the classic. There is also a Middle Eastern restaurant and a few places serving Indian cuisine. Pubs and bars, however, are the main attraction and source of entertainment. The Chemic Tavern and TJ’s Bar welcome both locals and students and frequently feature live bands.

SHOPPING

Although Woodhouse is close to larger areas like Hyde Park, it does have several of its own shops and amenities, including pharmacies, a dentist, an optometrist, a nail salon, a bookstore, a music store and gift shops. The Morrisons and Sainsbury’s supermarkets are within a mile. All home goods can be found at the all-inclusive Wilko outlet and the Home Bargains discount store.

SCHOOLS

Woodhouse and the surrounding area has a great selection of schools that include:

  • Quarry Mount Primary School
  • Blenheim Primary School
  • Leeds City Academy
  • Brudenell Primary School
  • University of Leeds

TRANSPORT LINKS

There is excellent public transportation to the university and city centre. The area is also pedestrian and bicycle friendly. Additionally, the Leeds Bradford Airport is about seven miles away and the A64(M) offers connection to the A1(M) and M62.

HISTORY

First referenced in the 1100s, Woodhouse was originally part of the manor of Leeds. As time passed, the area saw the occupancy of soldiers during the English Civil War and, then, was the victim of an accidental bombing during World War II. Today, the quiet suburban setting and scenery is a beautiful respite from the hectic city with a diverse community.
