Meanwood

Just northwest of Leeds city centre, Meanwood enjoys a village-like atmosphere on the edge of the vibrant metropolis. THINGS TO DO

Meanwood Park is a 72-acre park in the north featuring open spaces, basketball and tennis courts, a bowling green, a playground and extensive walking paths. The Hollies, another park nearby, is lush, forested woodland with beautifully overgrown trees and flowers. You can get sporty at the amateur cricket and rugby league clubs. While kids will find endless entertainment at the Meanwood Valley Urban Farm, which contains several farm animals, a garden and a two-acre meadow that is a wildlife haven.

EATING & DRINKING

Cafes and restaurants are scattered along the border that is shared with Headingley. Choose from traditional comfort food at the Hungry Bear, Italian dishes at Salvo’s and other international flavours. Meanwhile, local pubs and bars like Alfred, East of Arcadia and Myrtle Tavern offer quality real ales and more.

SHOPPING

In addition to grocery stores, a post office, a medical centre and a library, Meanwood is home to several little independently owned gift, apparel, antique and vintage shops. The outlet store, QLM House and Home, also has a vast selection of furniture and home goods.

TRANSPORT LINKS

Meanwood is a well-connected suburb that is nestled between Chapel Allerton and Headingley and close to the city centre. The suburb sits along the Inner Ring Road which enables fast travel around the city and to motorways like the A1(M) and M62. Buses are consistent, with service every five to 10 minutes, with the number 51 connecting Meanwood to the Leeds city centre. Additionally, the Leeds Bradford Airport is less than eight miles away.

HISTORY

Between the 16th and 19th centuries, Meanwood Valley became a highly industrialised area, utilising the Meanwood Beck stream to power machinery for corn flax production, dye works, tanneries and paper mills. The onset of transportation routes in the 1800s drew workers from around the city and is a popular residential area today.
